Random Stuff
The fall of 1996 saw me hooking up with a group of paintball players at Cornell to go out and play. Unsanctioned by Cornell University Athletics, we played as the Big Red Swelling, an informal paintball team. It was more like a club, really.
October of that year, Skirmish Paintball in Jim Thorpe, PA, held its biennial "World Record Game," where they attempted to attract the largest group of players in one place. I believe the number to beat was somewhere just shy of 2000.
Unfortunately, the weekend of the game was also the weekend that the remnants of a hurricane were racing up the East Coast, so a lot of people didn't show. I doubt we broke the record that year, but there were still a whole lot of people at the game.
The play was good and the fields were great, though there were a few people playing with slightly flawed sportsmanship. I got nailed once in each shoulder by a sniper that was "running hot," or firing paint at a velocity above the 280 fps limit. Wounded pride from being nailed by a sniper aside, it hurt like hell and the welts lasted for several months afterwards.
The only other downside for the weekend was that I lost my Canadian Contingent hockey jersey, but I was able to replace it later.
