San Diego Comic-Con 2005 (16 July 2005)

Friends and Artists

The two of the three reasons why I go to San Diego Comic-Con is to meet up with friends and to meet artists. Got that in spades. Maybe I was stretched a little too thin this year as I wasn't able to meed up with three separate groups of friends that were also at the con. I also got to meet Billy Tucci and Mark Sparacio, but as it was late in the day, I didn't get a chance to snap any pics.

I first met Dirk two years ago. Love him to bits and I'm really glad to see him so smitten with his new girlfriend. Good things, my friend.

Scott Kurtz and his wife at the PVP Online table. Funny little story: I was wandering around trying to find the PVP booth when some lady cried out, "You got the shirt!" I was wearing the "Joss Whedon is my master now" t-shirt that PVP Online had put together. Turns out the lady was the wife of Scott Kurtz (the braintrust behind PVP Online). She led me to the table and we had a good long chat about what it's like to live with a cartoonist and how Scott started out on UO and built his audience from there.

Scott wasn't there at the time--can we say "partying late the night before"?--so I swung back around after noon and caught up to him and took this picture. Bought a bunch of his stuff and had my sketchbook christened by him. First, he liked my sketch, which I had done while waiting in line before the exhibit halls opened. He was surprised when I asked for Miranda for my sketch. Apparently, she's not a common request.

Exhibit Hall Displays

Nothing much to say here, really. There are a lot of commercial booths. To be honest, I preferred trolling through Small Press and the individual artists' booths rather than crowd around the big companies' displays.

Right: A LEGO Chewbacca at the Lucasfilm display.

Left: Optimus Prime, well, not really.
Right: Pikachu, definitely, not really.

Cheesecake

What's Comic-Con without cheesecake? I'm honestly surprised I didn't find more.

(Technically, the last picture doesn't belong here, but I didn't feel like creating another category just for them. Let's just pretend this section was called Cheesecake and One Cosplay.)

Serenity

See the movie! 'Nuff said.

Not really.

Based on repeated advice that Hall H was sealed off because it was full and yadda yadda yadda, I went to lunch around 1 instead of trying to get into Hall H while Kevin Smith was still there holding court. While it seemed my chances of actually getting into the Serenity panel at 2:15 were pretty bleak, I had this crazy notion in my head that I could walk back after lunch and just stroll in.

I should have crazy notions more often.

(Oh, the panel was great. It's so clear how much the actors love the characters, the movie, each other, and the fans. It was so great to hear them talk about what it was like to be in the movie, make the transition from TV to film, and what it's like to be a celebrity now.)
