Well before day arrived, a group of five students from Bo Law Kung Fu Association decided to band together for a group costume for Halloween. The students were Kevin Corcoran, Bill Coyle, Matt Martin, Pat Morgan, and Ian Ng. Drawing from the favoured film, "The Five Deadly Venoms," the idea was born to dress up as the characters from the film: The Centipede, The Snake, The Scorpion, The Lizard, and The Toad.
Pat Morgan gets significant amount of credit for making the masks, which really defined the roles and marked the singularly identifiable aspect of the characters. It was his hard work that really made the costumes a success. By comparison, the shopping for the robes was child's play (albeit requiring credit cards).
Since Halloween fell on a weekday, the parties were generally being held the weekend before, so the group gathered on Saturday, 28 October 2000, to don the costumes and pose for some pictures with the help of Bill's girlfriend, Mei Mei Chan, and her sister, Christine Chan. The results of these efforts can be seen below.
The night was made for the group before it had barely begun. Walking from Bill's apartment in Hoboken to the PATH train to take the group to the Village for the party, they were recognized twice by passers-by as the Five Venoms. From there, it was all downhill, culminating in a solid win at the party for best costume.
