7.8 Earthquake in Southern Cal

Albeit... only a drill.

We had the largest earthquake drill in US history today, simulating a 7.8 Richter temblor along the San Andreas fault.

Can't shake the feeling that it was really light on any real information or experience. Seems to me like there's a lot more to be aware of and take in than getting under a table for a minute and then reporting to a gathering area in the office.

While I'm all for disaster preparedness and education, this kind of thing--done improperly--appears more like theatre than actual preparedness.

Here's the audio track from the drill, which was not used in my building: http://www.shakeout.org/drill/broadcast.html.

Instead, building security did their own abridged version of the drill, read over the PA system.

In Remembrance

Thank you, soldiers, past and present. Your sacrifice has not been forgotten.

In Flanders Fields
by Lt.-Col. John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Thank you, John McCain

Once upon a time, I liked John McCain, somewhere before 2004. The last four years turned that opinion. He wasn't the guy I knew and respected once. The 2008 presidential election really soured.

Tonight, though, I rediscovered the John McCain I used to like and I have to wonder if even he is relieved to be able to return to his true self, rather than--what seems to me--something he had to force himself to be to run for President.
