Burn Burn Burn

In the North, we have Winter, with blizzards and cold and stuff. In the South, we've got thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes. In Cleveland, we've got a river that catches on fire.

And, in Southern California, we have fire season. Google's got a pretty good map of all the brush fires that have been raging throughout the region.

In total, twenty separate brush fires with a fear that Rice and Poomacha might join together explosively in Del Dios Canyon (The Canyon of God, wheee!). When I was at Disneyland on Sunday, we were getting hit pretty hard by the Santa Ana winds (blowing from the hot desert out to sea) and getting ashed on all day. Hearing only about the Canyon Fire (Malibu) on the news, I wasn't aware that there was the Santiago Fire (Irvine), too. The latter was the one dropping ash all over Anaheim.

Ash doesn't taste too good when screaming your way through California Screamin, by the way. Dries your mouth out something fierce. Had a great time, though, meeting up with Teresa and her family. Got to play with her kids and the neighbours kids and introduced them to a coaster with a loop. Don't you miss the days when just going on a loop was the highlight of your day? I do.

I miss the days when sitting in a box was fun, too.

Your Three Words

ABC has a (moderately) new TV show called i-CAUGHT that reports on the stories behind the videos that are most popular on the web, among other things. It taps into the whole online video culture that's pretty much de riguer for much of the online set.

While that in itself might be interesting--I don't know, I don't watch the show on account of not having a television or time to do so--but by virtue of the very thing that the show reports on, I can check out portions of it, such as... y3w.

y3w is short for Your Three Words and it was something that the show promoted for three episodes between 28 August and 11 September 2007. The initial call went out on 21 August for the audience's week, summed up in three words. They could be poignant, funny, philosophical, goofy, political, or what have you.

Here are some of the videos they got in response. Be prepared to laugh or cry or something in between:

For the week ending 28 August

Peau de Porc

We're into Week 5 of the NFL season so this is somewhat belated, but here's the team that I'm fielding this year:

Matt Hasselbeck QB SEA
Ben Roethlisberger QB PIT
vince Young QB TEN
Jamal Lewis RB CLE
Adrian Peterson RB CHI
Dominic Rhodes RB IND
Fred Taylor RB JAC
Chris Chambers WR MIA
Devery Henderson WR NO
Ronald Curry WR OAK
Santonio Holmes WR PIT
Antonio Gates TE SD
Jeremy Shockey TE NYG
Shayne Graham K CIN
Broncos D DEN
Vikings D MIN

Already I've dumped Devery Henderson WR NO, Adrian Peterson RB CHI, and Broncos D DEN in favour of Earnest Graham RB TB, Mason Crosby K GB and Titans D TEN.

The real shocker of it all is that I'm 4-0 thus far into the season and the only one with a perfect record after Week 4. The last week was a real squeaker. The only other 3-0 team ended up tying their opponent.

I went into the Monday night game with a 2 point lead over my opponent. I had Cincinnati's kicker and he had New England's kicker. It was the battle of the leg. His kicker booted two field goals and three extra points. My kicker hit two longish field goals and one extra point. On the night, he got 10 points and I got 9, for a final score of 73 to 72.

This week will be interesting. My kicker and defence are on bye, so I had to pick up replacements, though the replacements don't seem that bad at all. I'm still suffering from a decent running game or a consistent wide receiver corps, but they've been picking up the points where I needed them.

Eight months in 150 words

Let's try something a little more substantial than a quiz for a comeback post, eh?

Since February, I lost 10 pounds, Head Coached the Spring 2007 Introduction Leaders Program, visited Hong Kong, celebrated my Grandmother's 90th birthday, left my job, ended a six-month romantic relationship, lived a life of leisure, lived a life of anxiety, killed a Windows PC and a Mac Mini, got a new job as an IT Manager for a patient recruiting firm for clinical trials, test-drove a flower-decorated car at high speed on the 401, bargained for the bride, ushered at my cousin Dixon's wedding, went to a bachelor party on Canada Day, fell in love, got kicked out of Eden, reevaluated and reclassified "love" as "momentary insanity," got in a bunch of fights, wrote 30 pages of a screenplay, started Primary Head Coaching the Fall 2007 Introduction Leaders Program, ate a lot of Cajun-seasoned seafood, got a new celebrity girlfriend (one-sided), washed my car, and paid off a 5-year loan.

And breathe.
