Xmas Party Today

Company Xmas^H^H^H^Hholiday party today. Woo.

It was the usual affair in the Biltmore, which is a fabulous looking hotel. I have no idea what the rest of the hotel is like, though, since the only thing I ever see is the downstairs ballroom. This is my third holiday party with this firm.

This year feels different, though, a little odd, like something's missing, and I know exactly what it is. We're not going to Vegas this year. The first year I did this, a bunch of guys from the office went to Vegas immediately after the party. Last year, the weekend was inconvenient, so we pushed the trip off to the week after the party, but we still went. This year, it just felt like everything got fractured.

I'd almost say it was because everyone is too busy and buried in their work to do anything else, but that's just wild speculation based a little on my own experience of my life and some observation.

Either way, I'm not going to Vegas this December and I miss it. My bank account doesn't, but I do. I have no idea when I'll be able to go back, too, since the next six months are lined up such that I'm not expected to have a personal life, juggling between the Project That Must Be Done On Schedule and the increasing operational support work that I have to do to maintain what we've got in working order. It's like trying to build a new boat while keeping the old one just barely functional enough to keep going with baling wire and duct tape.

That said, the party was pretty cool. The food was good and plentiful. I didn't win anything this year, but they had these really cool ice sculptures. The martini bar had an ice sculpture that they poured the drinks through before they hit the glass. Very cool.
