Trust me on the sunscreen

Perhaps the best way to talk about my weekend is by talking about where my body doesn't feel like it should.

• There is a very distinct line around my collar that borders between the Orient and the Hurting Reds. I've hitherto considered myself practically burn-proof since I usually just get dark. I suspect that nearly 11 hours straight in the sun exceeds my usually high limits.
• Both of my arms are kinda red, though they don't hurt. They're also unevenly tanned. The one the right is darker than the one on the left, except for a three inch band around the wrist, which is lighter than the rest of the arm. Sounds kind of odd, I suppose, but it probably makes more sense when I reveal that I had a camera strap wrapped around it for most of the day and had the arm folded up so that my hand was by my ear most of the day.
• Why was it there? Well, the fact that my right elbow is sore might have something to say about that. I lugged around a digital SLR with a 28-135mm lens pretty much non-stop Saturday and Sunday. After awhile, it was just more comfortable to rest the camera on my shoulder than to let it hang from my wrist. I didn't like having it around my neck because the strap made my neck all sweaty.
• My left knee is sore, probably from all the walking.
• My right hip was sore after Saturday, but got better by Sunday morning.
• My feet are sore. I could really use a massage. I'm glad I didn't get a blister from wearing dress shoes on Saturday and doing all that walking.

What did I do to incur the wrath of pain?

Saturday, I went to San Diego Comic-Con, starting around 8 and leaving after it closed at 7. For the most part, it was a lot of running around from swag booth to swag booth, but here are a few highlights:

• Saw some old friends: Kit, Sarah, Madeline, Yih, Matt (Black Bastard) and Dirk (Paradigm Shift). Heard they were around, but never got a chance to link up with Jason, Pauline or Rosalie. Briefly wandered around with my colleague, Jeremy.
• I was trying to find the PVP Online booth when I ran into someone that cried, "You got the shirt!" I was wearing the "Joss Whedon is my master now" shirt that PVP Online had produced on Think Geek. Turned out it was Scott's wife and she led me to the booth, where I hung out with her for awhile. Circled back later to find Scott Kurtz (the author/artist of PVP Online).
• Met Gabe and Tycho of Penny Arcade fame. Penny Arcade and PVP Online are pretty much the only web comics I read.
• Met Ron Glass and Adam Baldwin from Serenity. Incredibly nice people that I wish I had more time to talk to. Adam is so clearly appreciative of his fans, which was echoed again later at...
• Serenity Panel, which I didn't think I'd get into with all the hubbub about Hall H being sealed off and the line being long and all that, but I had this strange notion that I could just stroll in, late, and still get to participate. As it was, the previous panel went way late and even though I showed up at 2:30, I was just in time to see it start. Nothing really substantive came out of the Q&A, but it was a definite love fest for the cast (all but Alan Tudyk were there).
• Had a great pair of conversations with Billy Tucci and Mark Sparaccio, who work on the Shi comic.

Sunday, I was already hurting from the day before and I had to option not to do what I had planned, which was to go to Disneyland for the 50th Anniversary of its opening. This was the actual day of the anniversary, 17 July 2005, even though Disneyland is running a summer-long celebration of it.

• Met Lee Price, the 10,000,000 person through the gates of Disneyland. She was 5 at the time. She also had a lifetime pass to any Disney park. How cool is that?
• Met Bonnie, who's been working at Disney longer than I've been alive. She was a really cool woman who had a lot of stories to tell and gave some great advice for what to do for the fireworks.
• Met a gentleman who used to do watercolour portraits in the 70's. The feature was removed in the late 70's but recently restarted, so he's back doing watercolours again.
• Met a lovely New Zealander family--Roger, Geraldine and Talia--that had saved up for some time to come to Disneyland as a whole. They happened to come by for the fireworks by chance on their last night before going home and totally lucked out by being here for the "special day". Fantastic bunch to hang out with and I learned a lot about the dairy industry in the process.

And trust me on the sunscreen.
