Serenity

Saw an advanced screening of Serenity on Thursday night.

Need I say more? No spoilers.

I loved it.

I've only seen three episodes of Firefly, so I was able to enjoy the show primarily as someone who's had a little bit of background on the characters and their relationships, but without the deep entrenchment and attachment that some of the Browncoats (fans of the show) have for the characters.

All in all, it's a great film, albeit rough since it isn't yet in its polished final form. Mal is the rogue that Han Solo wishes he could be. The rest of the crew kick ass in their own distinctive ways.

It's really amazing, some of the subtleties that they put in, even from just a single change of expression.

Joss Whedon, the writer, also does a fantastic job of lifting you up with one emotion and suddenly dropping you onto another. While this is usually done with tension-tension-lightheartedness, there's at least one example in the film where it's reversed with fantastic effect.

Will it leave fans torn? Probably. For the rest of the movie viewing public, though, it could be very interesting. I don't know which way it could turn.

Personally, I like heroes with questionable ethics, which has always been one of the reasons why I liked Firefly. "Let's be bad guys," as Jayne says. The story is gritty and well told.

From the mouths of fans, it may be a little too neatly wrapped up, but I'm not complaining. The movie has to stand on its own, and we have no guarantees that a sequel will be made, though I certainly hope there are sequels, in plural.

There are moments where you clap happily, border on tears, sit on the edge of your seat, and grin madly at a well turned line. This movie is certainly quotable, and I'm not giving away anything that isn't already in the trailer (in high definition, if you're running Mac OS X).

"I aim to misbehave."
