Serenity

Saw an advanced screening of Serenity on Thursday night.

Need I say more? No spoilers.

I loved it.

I've only seen three episodes of Firefly, so I was able to enjoy the show primarily as someone who's had a little bit of background on the characters and their relationships, but without the deep entrenchment and attachment that some of the Browncoats (fans of the show) have for the characters.

All in all, it's a great film, albeit rough since it isn't yet in its polished final form. Mal is the rogue that Han Solo wishes he could be. The rest of the crew kick ass in their own distinctive ways.

It's really amazing, some of the subtleties that they put in, even from just a single change of expression.

Joss Whedon, the writer, also does a fantastic job of lifting you up with one emotion and suddenly dropping you onto another. While this is usually done with tension-tension-lightheartedness, there's at least one example in the film where it's reversed with fantastic effect.

Will it leave fans torn? Probably. For the rest of the movie viewing public, though, it could be very interesting. I don't know which way it could turn.

Personally, I like heroes with questionable ethics, which has always been one of the reasons why I liked Firefly. "Let's be bad guys," as Jayne says. The story is gritty and well told.

From the mouths of fans, it may be a little too neatly wrapped up, but I'm not complaining. The movie has to stand on its own, and we have no guarantees that a sequel will be made, though I certainly hope there are sequels, in plural.

There are moments where you clap happily, border on tears, sit on the edge of your seat, and grin madly at a well turned line. This movie is certainly quotable, and I'm not giving away anything that isn't already in the trailer (in high definition, if you're running Mac OS X).

"I aim to misbehave."

In Over My Head

On Monday, I promised a friend--who happens to be a director--that I would write a script for him by 9 September 2005 with an outline in his hands by next Friday.

So I have but on idea on how to start: I have J. Michael Straczynski's book on scriptwriting.

Much as I would not have expected myself to write this genre of film, I've found my first idea fits "romantic comedy" pretty well.

A few questions for anyone that reads this, then:

Do you like romantic comedies? (Keep going even if you don't)
What do you like about romantic comedies?
What do you dislike about romantic comedies?
What makes a romantic comedy "great" as opposed to just "good"?
What do you hate to see in a romantic comedy?
I am, of course, well aware that any successful romantic comedy has to have Meg Ryan in it, but I'm not going to worry about casting for now.

Does this sound like a ridiculous venture? Sure it does. There are 50,000 scripts floating around Hollywood looking for someone to pick them up. I have a 1 in 140,000 chance of actually having something I write turned into a film.

It's not about having something turned into a picture, though it'd be a nice bonus. It's more about me no longer sitting on my ass about writing or about doing something that I'd love to do rather than doing nothing for fear of succeeding.

I have one big hankering to go on a noodle tour of the LA area right now. Originally I went lookin gfor a place where I could learn to hand-swing noodles, but ended up finding this great article about noodle places in LA.

Handmade soba, udon, Chinese noodles, spaetzle... so many restaurants, so little time...

WoW Update

For awhile, I kept thinking that my level 40 Rogue was still my main, but to be really honest, it's not anymore. I mean, it's sad to say that I reached 40 with it and then stopped, but that's pretty much what I did. I basically fell in with a different group of people on another server and had more fun playing with them, so I swapped over.

Since I can't port my character over from another server, I pretty much have to start over, which I have, several times over. I'm still the altaholic on Lightbringer as i was on Uther. My new main is a Warrior. I don't know why I chose a Warrior... I suppose it has something to do with the challenge and stigma of being an unloved class. The fact that I have an almost-20 Rogue helps to mitigate the times when I just want to go out and lay down the smack.

I know they're terribly cliche and slinky, but I just like the elves. I could do without the ears, but they're just fun. If only I could learn dances from other races. The Tauren females do the Electric Slide.

In case anyone was trying to find me during those odd times where I can get online and game--I'm mostly sneaking on for an hour or two here or there late on weeknights--the current roster of characters is below the cut.

Main

Lightbringer: Fionnabhair, 13 Night Elf Warrior Miner Blacksmith

Alts (in order of likelihood of play)

Lightbringer: Saccharine, 18 Night Elf Rogue Skinner Leatherworker
Lightbringer: Macjustus, 7 Human Paladin Miner Blacksmith
Lightbringer: Siobhan, 3 Night Elf Hunter Skinner Leatherworker
Lightbringer: Babysitter, 7 Gnome Warlock Tailor Enchanter
Lightbringer: Ermine, 9 Human Priest Herbalist Alchemist
Shadowsong: Naeve, 17 Night Elf Druid Herbalist Alchemist
Shattered Hand: Angevin, 8 Night Elf Druid Herbalist Alchemist

Not Played

Argent Dawn: Shaelynne, 11 Human Paladin Miner Blacksmith
Lightbringer: Marlena, 18 Human Warrior Miner Blacksmith
Scarlet Crusade: Biessy, 7 Tauren Shaman Skinner Leatherworker (yes, it's wordplay on Mad Cow Disease)
Uther: Naeve, 40 Human Rogue Skinner Leatherworker
Uther: Siobhan, 11 Night Elf Hunter Skinner Leatherworker

Is it some hot date?

No...
