Brevissimae Bracae Femineae

If you thought Latin was a dead language, wake up. The Vatican has helpfully "updated" the language to include such words as cigarette (fistula nicotina), punk (punkianae catervae assecla), and nightclub (taberna nocturna). Their stated reason for the update? Cletus Pavanetto, the president of the Latinitas Foundation, said, "It is for theologians who wish to make their writing more relevant to modern issues, but it is also for any Latin enthusiast who wishes to make himself better understood."

So how do you like the hot pants in the title of this post?

Faith in the Presidency

Separation of the Church and State has been a mantra in the US for a good long time. I suck on the history behind this, but I suspect it's a holdover from England that has managed to persist to the current day. However, in the past four years, the separation here has become less and less distinct.

Ron Suskind wrote an article for the New York Times regarding what he says has become a faith-based presidency. The connecting of dots to me is somewhat disturbing, tempered only by my general cynicism.

The Next New Adventure

There are actually several new adventures coming up. For one, I'm starting Landmark Education's Self Expression and Leadership Program this weekend. I'm really quite excited about it. After living complacently for so long, these past few months have been incredibly dynamic.

I've been going out more and hanging out with people, rather than being married to the computer, which partially explains why there's been so little activity here for so long. First it was City of Heroes, which was both active and probably the height of my complacency, and then it was practically the exact reverse, where I had nearly no time to play the game and was out doing stuff to the point of having to make time to do laundry.

The SELP, then, is the next step in that progression. I've got energy and creativity to burn and this will help put a structure around it so that I can direct it into something... I don't know what, yet, but whatever it is, I'm sure I'll have fun doing it.

The other big adventure this weekend is car shopping. I've finally caved to the Los Angeles car culture, some thirteen months after moving here. With all this stuff that I'm doing now, I just can't afford to be constrained by a lack of mobility. Mass transit is great for some places, but there are areas of the metro where access is pitiful, especially late at night.

So, I've got a pre-approved loan and I'm off to go used car shopping tonight. Don't know what I'll end up with, but if I'm lucky, maybe it'll be a ragtop.

And so it begins...

Florida has already begun to lose ballots. Apparently, 58,000 absentee ballots have "gone missing".

What's next? Will the electronic voting machines miscount?

For those of us who are ineligible to vote... we can still pretend at GlobalVote. Won't this be a hoot to see how the rest of the world would like to see this race end?

Genetically Engineering Gods

Cats were treated as gods once... they haven't forgotten.

They certainly won't forget when companies like Allerca start genetically engineering hypoallergenic cats. Something there just doesn't seem right.

I don't know why it should even be necessary to genetically engineer an animal just so people can have designer pets. I suppose it's the same kind of argument that could be made for genetically engineering human children. Is there really a difference?

Sure there is. The mere suggestion of genetically engineering children will have people up in arms about it. Someone will refer to eugenics and its disastrous impact.

So why is it acceptable to do the same for cats, just so people who are allergic to cats can have a cat? I've got a tip for the people allergic to cats... get a dog. Or a ferret.

Slow Going

This weekend, I did it. I finally converted the blog over to MovableType after saying I'd do it for how long now? It's done.

Well, not quite. The template for the main page has been loaded, but the archive template hasn't been updated yet. Moreover, I still have to go through all of my 500+ posts over the last three years and massage them into the new database format.

I've been able to work my way back to the beginning of March of this year. It's going to be a long way to December 2001.

Changes

Those of you that actually poke around in the other recesses of this site may have noticed something this week. I've started updating the layout. It's a bit of a departure from the current format, which is still used for the blog pages.

Why haven't the blog pages been converted? My intention is to upgrade to MovableType tonight. I actually have a previous version installed already, but it's not used for anything public. The most daunting task I have facing me now is migration of the old blog entries over to the new. We'll see how that goes.

So, maybe, finally, you guys will have comments.

Curse of the Bambino

Wow. Simply wow.

Game 4 of the ALCS was pretty cool. Game 5, awesome. I really wanted the Red Sox to win at that point. Game 6, alright! History was made, the first team to ever tie up a series after being down 3-0. Wouldn't it be sweet if they could pull off the win?

Game 7, oh my <insert deity here>...
