Irritable

It's been hot and bludgeoningly so the past couple of days. Sunday night, I went to sleep at 2 a.m., expecting to be up around 10 and get a decent jump on the day. Instead, I spent five hours tossing and turning, unable to sleep. It was awfully fun spending twelve hours to get seven hours of swimming-in-your-own-sweat sleep.

Yeah, I don't have an A/C unit in my apartment. It's not that I don't have one--it's sitting in the hallway--it's that I don't trust these old windows to be able to hold the thing without it pitching outside and falling several storeys and killing someone. So, I have to suffer the heat. To get some perspective on this, today there is a Heat Advisory, which means that the Heat Index (temperature plus the effect of humidity, like the analogue of the Wind Chill Factor) will approach or exceed 100 F (38 C). This is all well and good on its own, except my apartment's on the top floor of this brownstone and there's no air movement, which means that the temperature inside the apartment feels like it's 10-15 F higher than the outside ambient temperature. It sucks.

To add to my irritation, I've discovered that it will cost me more to fly each of my cats across the country than it would for me to fly myself. Damned annoying.

So that was yesterday.

Today seems a little better, except for the four hours of sleep (really closer to two and a half after the not-asleep-but-trying-to-fall-asleep period). Ran an errand for Jeanne, came out to claim my laptop (I'm sitting in the store right now), and will head down to the pet store to see if I can get a travel carrier for the cat(s). At this rate, I think I'm going to have to transport them one at a time... or see if I can find a home for them locally.

Long and short of it is this: they either have to be moved out to LA or given away locally, because if I move to Canada in August (a distinct possibility) or end up traveling to Asia to teach English (another distinct possibility), there's no way I can bring the cats with me.

Then again, if I win the lottery tonight, the problems are solved. ;)
