Mixed Feelings: USA 2, Mexico 0
Like a fool, I stayed up last night (or this morning) to watch the footie match between the US and Mexico all the way over in Korea. The game started at 2:30 a.m. locally and I turned off the TV at 4:20, right after the closing whistle. Not the brightest move I've ever made, but it's not the first time this World Cup that I've stayed up to watch a game.
The US was clearly dominated by the Mexicans in terms of play. The Mexicans held the ball for 70% of the time, yet they simply couldn't put the ball past Friedel. On the other side of the pitch, the US got a couple of very pretty goals. The first goal looked like blind luck when I saw it, but reading the reports this morning, it was apparently an intentional pass out to McBride who drove it home. I have to say, excellent execution on the two goals (the other was a header by Donovan on a cross from the left) by the US. They really made their 30% of possession count.
Alas, I was half hoping the Mexicans would win because they seem like such a spirited team where as the American team seemed soulless. I'm not sure how to explain it. The sense is that they execute well and they play well, but they seem to lack the passion that the European and Latin American teams exhibit. It's like trash talking in basketball and fighting in hockey. It's not a necessary part of the game, but it's fun to watch. I guess I just wanted to see the more spirited team advance. The US kiss like dead fish.
That being said, though, I hope they whup Germany's ass on Friday because... well, Germans should stick to making beer and luxury cars. ;)
Who do I want to win? Brazil. Oh yeah...
