Your own little piece of Dilbert This comes from a friend of mine, via email:This is how crap my boss is.
He got an email about a meeting and he replied (copying to me) saying that he wouldn't be able to attend but would ask me to go instead. I didn't remember anything about a meeting coming up, but didn't think any more of it as I never go to departmental meetings.
Anyway, he just got a reply (again copied to me) and it said "Roy, if you would care to look at the date on my original email, you will see that it was sent to you on 29th April and so the meeting is now finished".
So it took him 3 months to read an email !!!! I'm not sure whether to LOL or cry...

The Pointer Sisters I'm so excited, And I just can't hide it. Hook up my Mac to A. D. Yeah, I think I'll like it.
"Jaguar" (MacOS X v10.2) was announced today with the usual cools for the home user that just wants to have fun with their Macs, but the big thing that's got me going is that there's much better business support on the new version, shipping 24 August for $129. In the new version, there will be improved file sharing with Windows networks, interoperability with Active Directory, and PPTP VPN capabilities.
Which means I'm a giant leap closer to sticking a Mac on my office's network. Now if I can only get document management to work, I'd be flying high.
Or win the MegaMillions lottery. That'd do it, too.

Hello, Kitty
Me and Hello Kitty, we be friends.
Taken at the Sanrio store on 42nd St. by Julia, who's visiting the city for MacWorld. I hear that Steve Jobs is going to announce that he's going to do this year what he's been doing every year, Pinky^H^H^H^H^HBilly. Try to take over the world!
(Funny little side story: while taking this picture, I had to displace the security guard for the store and his friend, who were talking right in front of Hello Kitty. Actually, as I approached from the back of the store, it really looked like Hello Kitty was giving the guard's friend a hummer, but that just wasn't right to commit to film. Anyway, after this picture was taken, the guard's reaction was a rather emphatic, "You did NOT just do that! You did NOT just do that!" Oh yes, I did... and I didn't even bring the stuffed beaver along. That reminds me, I need to finish off a roll of film in my old camera so that you can see all the beaver shots I took.)

One Last Sandwich An odd thought that popped into my head today as the lunch hour started to creep around: If you could have one sandwich -- any sandwich, made by whoever you wanted to make it -- but this would be the last sandwich you would ever eat, what would it be?
Originally, I thought of some of the best sandwiches I've had, like a roast turkey on a toasted kaiser with alfalfa sprouts and avocado back at Ruloff's in Collegetown in Ithaca. Or the T-Sui from the Hot Truck, also from my college days. I waxed nostalgic of the first time I had a Woody Allen (pastrami and corned beef) at Carnegie Deli. I thought of the mortadella and mozzarella on semolina from Lisa's Deli just down the street from my apartment, that I've bought practically every time I've gone in there. I've had a few great sandwiches, a lot of mediocre ones, and more crappy ones than I care to remember, but...
If it were the last sandwich I was ever going to have, I'd want it to be a peanut butter (creamy) and jelly (strawberry) on white bread, with the crust.
And I'd want Elvis to make it.

And I want my blankie, too! If there's one thing that delis are woefully missing here in NYC (or anywhere else that I've seen), it's a plain jane, standard, comfort food: PBJ on white bread.
I want a PBJ...

What you say? Tech1: somebody set up us the monopoly. Tech2: main monitor turn on! CEO: It's you! On a more serious note, albeit biting, The Register reports that Microsoft is killing off Windows 2000, and forcing people to buy Windows XP and subscribe to Licensing 6.0. I've had personal experience with licensing products through Licensing 6.0. It sucks the royal balls.

Cryomouse If you've ever wanted to turn your mouse into a cryogenic chamber for hapless LEGO amputees, this is the place to learn how to be that kind of villain. Of course, if you're going to do that, get yourself some pure-cut hashish and buy up on other villain accessories. Style is everything, after all.

Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter No, really, it's a movie. Filmed in my hometown of Ottawa, ON, Canada, apparently. Too bad it's not out on DVD or VHS yet. They're taking it around for screenings, though. Check out the film maker's website, Odessa Filmworks.

J. C. Watts Here in the US, J. C. Watts is not planning to run again for his seat in Congress. This is a big deal for Republicans as he is one of the few Black Republicans.
But I remember him as the quarterback of the Ottawa Rough Riders of my youth.
If you think that's jarring, Alanis Morrisette sang Britney-esque teenie bop candy fluff in Canada when I was in high school. Nyah. (She also went to my rival high school, so I hate her on principle.)

Mosquitoes 9 Ian 2 There are a lot of things that I have missed about not living in Ottawa, many of which I was reminded of this past weekend when I returned for the first time during the summer in at least five years, possibly seven. One thing I don't miss is being eaten alive by mosquitoes. My fight with the mosquitoes started and pretty much ended right away on the first evening back on Chris Cooper's deck after his rehearsal dinner. Pretty much all of the bites I got, I got that night. I managed to keep it from being a shutout by killing two later that evening, one male and one female. They're dead, but I'm still itching.
For those that don't know, I went home to Ottawa this weekend for Chris and Kristina's wedding. My weekend started Friday morning with a flight home in the morning. Things were somewhat rushed as I had to make a last minute run for the dry cleaners to grab my suit for the wedding on Saturday, as I was delayed at work the night before and I couldn't get it in time. Napped the afternoon away before going over to Chris'.
Saturday was the blessed day itself. I slept in. I didn't have anything to do. Unfortunately, I also missed the S. Korea-Turkey game, but I was willing to take that hit for the extra hours of sleep. Went out for a dim sum lunch with my parents.and came back and relaxed a bit before heading over to the Museum of Natural History only three blocks away from my parents' place. I admit I'd never have thought that the Museum of Natural History (dinosaurs and all) would be available as a venue, but apparently it's also available for bar mitzvahs (Matt Orrbine, the best man's, but I didn't find that out until this weekend).
The ceremony was heartfelt and simple, the kind that's rife with symbolism without the pomp and circumstance of church weddings. It was officiated by Diane Smolka from the Humanist Association of Canada. There was a symbolic pouring of wines from both families to give the couple their blessing, complete with tension-relieving laughter as Kristina tries to tip the goblet for Chris but found him just a bit too tall and her lovely dress just a bit too constraining.
There followed a cocktail hour with the usual hobnobbing and hors d'oeuvres. Ran into some old friends, including Mike Shaver and his wife Tyla from high school and Kevin from a Superbowl here in Manhattan a couple of years ago. It was great to talk with everyone again, but it seems like all of the folks my age are all in the middle of changing jobs. It was a little discouraging, but fortunately it didn't last long. The receiving line and dinner was upon us.
They had a really cool idea for place settings. Each table was set with a gem or dinosaur theme, such as "Tyrannosaurus Rex," "Velociraptor," "Agate," or "Rose Quartz," in keeping with the whole Museum of Natural History thing. Each of our name plates had a magnet with our table's theme on it, guiding us to our tables. I thought it was quite fun.
Dinner was buffet style, punctuated by the usual speeches and toasts. Instead of the usual kissing in response to the clinking of glasses, we were rewarded only for performances of some sort, whether it be poetic, musical, or some other act. There were plenty of poems, some better than others. There was also an attempt at juggling by the parents' table and an a capella rendition of "The Love Boat" theme by the University of Guelph crew. There was also plenty of kissing. Booyah.
There was dessert, dancing, plenty of laughs, a shockingly accurate replay of the dance stylings of Vanilla Ice, and in the end, we all went home tired, but happy.
But before going home, I stopped for poutine with Matt, his girlfriend Michelle, and his friend, Marius.
Sunday was pretty quiet. Watched the World Cup final with my parents on replay on a Chinese station in. That was pretty interesting. I've watched the games in English (bleah), Spanish (more fun), and Cantonese (odd). Thank God Brazil won. Kick ass! After that, everything else was pretty much anticlimactic. Lunch at a less than stellar Korean restaurant nearby, flight home, yadda yadda yadda.
And that was my weekend. How was yours?

Happy Canada Day! To all my Canadian brethren, Happy Canada Day!
Had a great time over the weekend at Kris and Chris' wedding (as Mike Shaver put it, it's strategically wiser to be on Kris' side), but I haven't the time to write about it now. I'll get to it tonight and put up some pictures.
